Where do I register my child for sports?
All athletes must register online using the FCPS-approved system. Go ahead and register even if you’re not sure they’ll tryout. Registration link: https://students.arbitersports.com/en/programs/77d99cc4-dc06-49c0-98d2-68f029d3b363/preview
Registration includes emergency care information, concussion education, and parent/guardian approvals. Registration must be completed before tryouts.
How and when do physicals happen?
A VHSL sports physical is required every year. The physical must be dated after May 1 for the upcoming school year. Physicals can be completed at your pediatrician, urgent care clinics, or at a school-sponsored school sponosored Physical Nights. We are having our HHS Sports Physical Night on MAY 18th. Click here to make an appointment: 2026 Sports Physical Registration. You will receive a confirmation email within 48 business hours of scheduling. Physicals are $50 and the proceeds benefit supplies for our athletic training program (FCPS does NOT cover the cost of athletic training - ie the bandages, crutches, equipment, etc all come from donations)
Any questions, comments, or concerns? Please contact Lisa Petruzzi (LTPetruzzi@fcps.edu)
Where do I submit my child’s physical?
Physicals are submitted electronically through the online registration system. You will upload the completed VHSL form during registration. The Activities Office must approve the physical before participation.
Do I need to purchase a uniform?
Uniforms are provided by the school and must be returned at the end of the season. Some sports may require athletes to purchase personal items such as cleats, practice gear, or sport-specific equipment. Optional spirit wear may also be available. Please note, FCPS does NOT pay for uniforms, these are paid via fundraising by the team and donations from the HHS Sports Boosters.
When are tryouts for each season?
Fairfax County Public Schools has three athletic seasons:
Fall season begins in early August
Winter season begins in early November
Spring season begins in late February
Exact dates vary by year and sport and are posted on the athletics website and shared by coaches.
How will I know when tryouts are happening?
Tryout information is shared through the Herndon High School Athletics website, school emails and newsletters, coaches, and team social media accounts. Registering early can also help ensure you receive updates. You can sign up for emails from HHS and HHS athletics here: https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/VAEDUFCPS/subscriber/new?qsp=VAEDUFCPS_1
What are the deadlines for registering to try out?
Registration must be fully completed before the first day of tryouts. This includes submitting the physical and completing all required forms. Students who are not fully registered and cleared cannot participate in tryouts.
What is a “Green Day”?
A Green Day is an optional, out-of-season workout or conditioning session run by coaches. These are not tryouts and are not mandatory. They allow students to meet coaches, build skills, and prepare for the upcoming season.
How do we know when a Green Day is occurring?
Green Day schedules are not centrally published. They are typically shared through coach emails, team social media accounts, word of mouth from players, and occasional school announcements. The best way to stay informed is to contact the coach or follow the team’s social media accounts.
Where can I purchase spirit wear?
Coaches will send out information about team-specific spirit wear. You can purchase general spirit wear here
Where do I find the sports schedules?
The main schedule is on the county athletics site listed above. We are also maintaining a schedule page to make it easier for our families and that can be found here.
What other season-specific things do I need to know?
Each season HHS hosts a meet the coaches night where there is a presentation from our athletics department staff, athletic trainers and coaches for each sport. This is a great night to attend, meet your coach and learn more about the programs at HHS. There is also a sports awards night for all sports after each season is over. It’s typically a weeknight and serves to celebrate our outstanding athletes - this is an event where everyone is together then goes into breakout sessions with their individual teams. These are small events, no food provided and no rsvp required.
What do the HHS Sports Boosters do?
The Herndon Sports Boosters is a parent-run organization that supports all athletic programs. Boosters help fund equipment, uniforms, and facility improvements, run concessions and fundraising events, provide scholarships and athlete recognition, and help build school spirit and community support.
